Heritage Fund Press Release
Shakespeare at Shoreditch Church 2019
Shoreditch has a close association with Shakespeare and his company of actors. The first Elizabethan theatres - The Theatre and The Curtain - are nearby and several prominent actors are buried here at St Leonard’s Church,
including James, Richard and Cuthbert Burbage.
Although the medieval church has been rebuilt since Shakespeare’s time, the original door, used by the actors, and no doubt Shakespeare himself, is preserved next door on the side entrance to The Clerk’s House. The original crypt, deep beneath the church, is thought by some to have been the inspiration for the tomb scene in Romeo and Juliet.
2019 is 400 years from the death of Richard Burbage, the first actor to play Richard III, Romeo, Henry V, Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, and Lear. To mark this occasion Shoreditch Church in partnership with The Globe Theatre, The
Theatre and The Secret Theatre and supported by the Heritage Fund are presenting a summer series of public arts events.
